No Excuses in Smart Prospecting: Know the Difference

In real estate and smart prospecting, time management is everything. Success isn’t just about making the right calls or setting up meetings—it’s about holding yourself accountable for how you use your time.

Some things are out of our control. You might be late because traffic on the freeway was at a standstill due to an accident. It happens. And that’s okay because it’s a legitimate reason.

But being late because you were watching TV? That’s an excuse. Excuses are used to justify a lack of discipline or preparation, and they can be the downfall of your success. The difference between the two is significant, and recognizing it is key to becoming more productive and reliable.

Excuses limit your potential. If you allow them to creep into your daily routine, they become barriers to progress. Whether it’s prospecting or closing deals, when you’re able to discern between what’s in your control and what’s not, you’ll be able to manage your time effectively, stay disciplined, and ultimately succeed in building your real estate business.

So what can you do?

  1. Reflect on Your Excuses – Are you late because of circumstances outside your control, or are you creating reasons to justify why you didn’t get the job done? Be honest with yourself.
  2. Plan Ahead – Avoid preventable situations. Leave earlier to allow for traffic or unexpected delays. Prioritize tasks and limit distractions like TV.
  3. Take Ownership – When you make a mistake or fail to meet an expectation, own it. Don’t let excuses cover up areas where you need to improve.

Success starts with accountability. You can’t control everything, but you can control how you respond to challenges and where you place your focus. By eliminating excuses, you make room for growth and success.
